Willette Brown '75
Willette has been teaching and training in Union, ME, for over 25 years and is preparing to move her farm to Wellington, FL, late summer of 2014. Her early career included riding event horses through the CCN level. Most recently, she has focused on dressage and earned her bronze and silver medals. She is now preparing to compete at Grand Prix. Willette is a licensed USEF "r" dressage judge and has been accepted into the "R" training program.
Along the way, Willette has trained students from the beginner level up through FEI. Her students have competed up and down the Eastern seaboard - even as far west as Colorado and California. Some highlights of her career include regional championships, as well as the FEI JR/YR Championships, and the USEF JR/YR Championships.
Willette came to Oldfields as a hunter rider, and she learned to love riding cross country up on Riding Hill. She fondly remembers June Curry pulling her hair out trying to teach her about dressage - Willette was mystified because all she wanted to do was jump! However, Ms. Curry did manage to get Willette and her fellow classmates to memorize the dressage letters when she set up a dressage arena on the grass near the tennis courts, (on borrowed space from Miss Herky!)
In the Fall of 2013, Willette visited the OS riding program and gave a lesson to two OS eventers. After her visit she wrote, “I was happy to see the School full to the brim and sporting a fabulous indoor arena. So wonderful that this sport continues to be a vital part of life at Oldfields. Lucky girls! Now where can we set up a dressage arena….hmmmm…?” We look forward to many more visits from Willette over the years!
