Green and White Night
Posted 09/24/2019 02:12PM

As of Monday, September 16, there are no “new girls,” only “Oldfields girls,” and each and every one has been assigned a color during the cherished Oldfields tradition of Green and White Night.

The students and faculty came together for a special dinner followed by the Green and White Ceremony presided over by Athletic Director Keslie Tomlinson ’99. After all new students and faculty have their color, everyone is released to solve the riddle and find the Thing-a-ma-bob, followed by cider and doughnuts on McCulloch Commons porch. The suspense was palpable as everyone waited to find out whether they would be a Green or a White---an association that lasts a lifetime! Our alumnae still feel a strong allegiance to their teams as you can see by the comments on Facebook when we post updates on the Green vs. White challenge.

It was around 1910 when the School divided into two teams that competed in tennis and basketball. The rivalry sometimes became contentious. During one of the more noisy disputes, an onlooker referred to the first simple rule in the student handbook—“Gentleness and courtesy are expected of all.” With delightful irony, the teams were named Gentleness, and Courtesy. Eventually the teams evolved into the much-loved Greens and Whites we know today. (McPherson, Feeling of Family. p.42-43)

The Green and White competition has evolved to include more than just athletic events. Students now earn points throughout the school year for their team based on academic achievements, athletic contests during Spirit Games, attendance, school spirit, community service, and of course, finding the Thing-a-ma-bob!

Green and White Night is by far one of my favorite traditions at Oldfields. You instantly belong and have something in common with this group of girls. After Green and White Night, you really understand that Oldfields is more than a school; it’s a combination of peers, faculty, and staff who want the best for you. This community is a family, and Green and White Night represents your official joining as a member of this wonderful, caring group!

For the past four years the White Team has won the coveted Green and White Cup that is awarded the night before Graduation for the most points in all the aforementioned competitions. Will this be the year the Greens make a comeback? We can’t wait to watch as it unfolds in the 2019-2020 school year!
