Fine Art classes, 1940

Throughout the history of Oldfields, the arts have been a vibrant and integral part of our Academic Program.

As a part of our core curriculum, Oldfields Arts Program has both depth and breadth with beginner through advanced levels of dance, theatre, and visual art studio courses in addition to photography, ceramics, public speaking, and applied design courses.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts have long been an essential part of an Oldfields education, starting when art study was taught by the School's founder, Anna Austen McCulloch in the 1870s. Oldfields seeks to foster the creative potential in every student, beginners and experienced alike, through a dynamic and diverse fine arts program. In our visual arts classes, we foster the development of critical thinking along with building technical skills in art. Our visual arts classes do this through discourse, writing and reflection on the creative process.

Performing Arts

The opportunities to express oneself through the Performing Arts are seemingly endless at Oldfields. As is the hallmark of an Oldfields experience, every girl, from beginners to the extensively trained, finds a joyful space to shine.

Dancers can participate in jazz, hip-hop, and ballet classes in addition to master classes offered throughout the year. Other options include After-school Dance, which meets the athletic requirement, and the award-winning Oldfields Dance Company which performs in numerous on and off-campus events. The opportunities to express oneself through the Performing Arts are seemingly endless at Oldfields.

The Oldfields Theatre Program is a wonderful way to become well-versed in every aspect of putting on a theatrical production including acting, designing, and stage crew. Whether you just want to dip your big toe in the acting arena or burst on stage as the lead, a variety of comedies, dramas, and of course,  musicals, provide opportunities to shine throughout the year. Collaboration with other local schools as well as our own dance and arts departments add to the richness of the experience.

Performing Arts classes are offered in drama, dance and theatre production, and public speaking. After school theatre also fulfills an athletic requirement.
